Bookend House
Unlocking space and potential for indoor and outdoor hosting.
Located within the Stroud Green Conservation Area, the original house was a “developer” new build house on the site of former garages. The house had very little regard to its design, particularly the size and arrangement of spaces, with disconnected and difficult-to-use external areas. The client, 1/3rd of DJ collective Customs, being a very social person, wanted to unlock the potential of the property for hosting family, friends and visiting DJs.
The project extended and refurbished the upper floor to make sense of the spaces and added an external staircase between the terrace and the courtyard below, making both spaces more accessible and connected. The extension itself referenced another modern timber-clad residential dwelling at the opposite end of the road to provide contemporary “bookends” to the traditional period terraces between.
This project was longlisted for the 2021 Don’t Move Improve awards and featured in Open House 2021 ( ).
